Native to the old world tropics, it is an annual or perennial herb or woody based sub shrub that takes about 6 months to mature. It is high in Vitamin C, anti-oxidants and helpful in reducing cholesterol. Traditionally part of the African and Caribbean food Culture it has spread around the world and is particularly big in West Africa and Jamaica where it is known as Bissap and Sorrel. Throughout the Caribbean it is an integral part of special celebrations. It is an everyday tea in many parts of Africa. It can be made as a hot or iced tea.
